Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get help from the Writing Center?
Bring with you as much as you can about the assignment: drafts, the teacher’s guidelines, your books...and we’ll go from there. We work on an appointment basis now...so be prepared.
Where is the Writing Center?
The Writing Center is located on the second floor of Flagler Hall in room 209. If you enter the building through the main front entrance on Woodland Ave, just go up the entrance stairs and you’ll see it off to the right on the left side of the hall.
How much does it cost?
Nothing! Stetson sponsors the Center because we know that writing is important, and that going through a revision process is the only way to get really good writing. Stetson wants you to do well, so the assistance we give you at the Writing Center is free.
Who are the tutors, and what kind of experience do they have?
The tutors have a wide range of experience. Most are English majors or graduate students in English with teaching experience as co-teachers or as professional instructors; others have been working in the Writing Center tutoring for a significant time. All are compenent writers and strive to teach what they know in a congenial and effective manner.
Does my teacher get notified when I come to the Center for help?
Yes. We’ve found that getting the teachers involved results in a higher quality education for you. Each teacher has slightly different expectations, after all, and it’s to your benefit to write well for each audience. So we send an evaluation to the teacher after you’ve been in, mentioning what you and the tutor worked on and suggesting some improvements.
Can the Writing Center really help with my writing?
Yes. When an objective person looks over your writing, you get a much better “eye” for what’s missing and what’s already working. After working with a tutor, you’ll understand what changes to make and why, and that’s how we work. We don’t attempt to make every paper perfect, we help you develop into a stronger writer.
I took a paper to the Writing Center, but the tutor wouldn’t fix all the stuff that was wrong. How come?
Because the tutor works with you, not for you. We want you to be a better writer, and that doesn’t happen when you don’t fix your own mistakes! However, we’ll work with you for as long as you want on identifying the “wrong stuff” and helping you figure out how to fix it. We don’t proofread, and we don’t check your grammar, and we don’t revise your papers. But we help you with all these tasks. That’s how we do things.
